Games that are too complex slow down the line. Games that are too easy don't feel worth the tickets. The sweet spot is a game that's simple to understand, takes 30–60 seconds to play, and feels genuinely winnable — even if the odds favor the house slightly.



For Chicago-area schools, weather is also a factor. Spring carnivals in April and May can still see 50°F days, so outdoor games need to work in light jackets. Fall carnivals in September and October are often the most popular, with comfortable temperatures and high parent turnout after summer break.

5. Spray N Race — A water gun racing game where players spray a stream of water to move a target across a track. High energy, loud, and draws a crowd. Works best in warmer months.

A general rule for school carnivals: plan for one game station per 50–75 students, with a minimum of 6–8 stations for events under 300 students. For larger events (300–600 students), 10–15 stations keeps lines moving and maximizes ticket revenue.



Most Chicago-area schools pair carnival games with at least one inflatable attraction — either a bounce house or a inflatable obstacle course — to give students a physical activity option between game stations.

Chicago Carnival Rentals offers both self-run and attendant-staffed packages. Self-run games are ideal when you have enough parent volunteers to manage booths. Attendant-staffed packages are better for larger events or when volunteer availability is uncertain — our uniformed staff handle setup, game management, prize distribution, and takedown.



For most school fundraisers in the Chicago suburbs (Arlington Heights, Naperville, Northbrook, Schaumburg, and similar communities), we recommend a hybrid approach: attendant-staffed for the 3–4 highest-traffic games, self-run for the rest.

Spring (April–May) and early fall (September–October) are the busiest booking periods for school carnivals in Chicago. We recommend booking 6–8 weeks in advance for these peak dates. Summer dates (June–August) are easier to book on shorter notice.
